This cartoon hits the nail on the head. The violence in Omaha has escalated so quickly and there seems to be no plan of action to cut it back, other then the mayor’s office and OPD saying “we’re concerned too.” It would be nice to see Hal Daub (and anyone else who should happen to run against him) offer up real solutions to this problem. Heck, it would be nice to see citizens of Omaha offering up solutions as well. (And, as a resident, I have to ask– where are 15 year olds getting guns?! How about we start getting those off the streets to begin with? And, with gang activity worse then ever before, how about we beef up the OPD gang unit?)
My theory has been, in the past, the the violence on particular areas of the city seems to level off once the weather gets cold. Unfortunately, not this year… it makes me nervous for how bad the spring and summer of 2009 will be.
Re: the violence fluctuating with the weather, it’s strange how March and November have been the two deadliest months this year. This summer there was just a whole lot of stabbing going on.
Let’s not forget that no one was all that concerned until people started getting shot in white, upperclass neighborhoods.
