Farewell to Burger King - May 1, 2008

from the Daily Nebraskan

The Burger King in the Nebraska Union was basically my office for three years, being upstairs from the Daily Nebraskan offices. It was where I developed the habit of needing fast food in order to come up with cartoon ideas. I have many fond memories of that place, having shared many wonderful meals with wonderful people.

I was there when BK distributed Backstreet Boys CDs in 1999. I ate there after aerobic swimming each morning in 1997. I saw the coming and going of the French Chicken Sandwich, one of the three International Chicken Sandwiches. I witnessed the arrival and departure of the Sourdough Bacon Cheeseburger from BKs of Lincoln. I was there when one of the north windows was broken, forcing the Union to replace all of them, as each window had a matching pattern painted on it.

The Daily Nebraskan ran this farewell cartoon today, and to properly honor the end of this era, I busted out the markers and did this cartoon old school DN style.

Terrorists strike the Fieldhouse - Aug 2, 2004

This is what will end up being the forgotten final cartoon from the Daily Nebraskan after having my cartoons picked up by the Journal-Star. It’s a pretty unceremonious ending, but I’d already done farewell/retirement cartoons twice by that point.

Fascists - July 18, 2004

from the 2004 Summer Daily Nebraskan

a few Saturdays ago, some Nazis held a rally downtown.

Billing Abe - June 28, 2004

from the 2004 Summer Daily Nebraskan

Dick Cheney came to Lincoln and Mayor Seng billed him for the $31,000 his trip cost the city. I think this is actually the first time Mayor Seng appeared in a cartoon.

Dick Cheney - June 21, 2004

from the Summer 2004 Daily Nebraskan.

Dick Cheney came to Lincoln, his childhood hometown, for a 1st Congressional District fundraiser. He spoke (as he still does) about the link between Iraq and 9/11. This was about a week after the 9/11 Commission revealed that they could find no link between Iraq and 9/11.

The second final cartoon - May 5, 2003

from the Daily Nebraskan

Having retired from the DN once already, this was Round 2 of final cartoons.

There was some rampant speculation about what my final cartoon was going to be, and I really didn’t know. I had been really pleased with my previous retirement cartoon from 2001 and it was going to be tough to follow in my mind.

If I remember right, I was at a party and someone was pressing me to find out what the final cartoon was, so I told her that I wouldn’t tell her what it was, but to place a bet with her friends that it would include dogs and firefighters.

I think I was just telling her that to end that part of the conversation, but when the time came, I thought it would be fun to actually include dogs and firefighters, just in case she really did place that bet with her friends.
